This is the deep dive on the mage

The best builds overview introduces the mage among the three paths. This page is the single-lane version, focused on the one decision that defines a caster run: Fire or Water. There is also a separate magic system guide that explains runes, circles, scrolls, and mana mechanically. This page assumes you already get the basics and instead walks through the build trade-offs, so the two pages cover different ground.

A quick reality check first. The mage is the hardest build to start and one of the strongest to finish. You spend the early game weak, gated behind a quest and expensive training, and you come out the other side throwing spells nothing else in the game matches. If you want power on day one, this is not your build.

How a mage gets off the ground

You do not start as a mage. You become one by joining a camp and earning the right to read runes. The intro quest is The Price of Magic, and finishing it is the gate. After that, the first purchase is Rune Magic plus your first rune, which costs 5 LP from a mage trainer. Torrez in the Old Camp market handles the Fire side.

From there, runes replace the wands you might expect from other RPGs. Each spell needs the matching rune in your inventory, the right circle of magic unlocked, and enough Mana to cast. You raise Mana at a trainer, the same way melee fighters raise Strength. Cronos in the New Camp and Baal Cadar in the Swamp Camp teach it. The whole system, including scrolls and the Inscription skill, is laid out in the magic spells, circles, and runes guide.

Fire vs Water: the core choice

Both schools reach the top of the magic tree, so neither one is the stronger pick. The choice comes down to your camp and the flavor of magic you want.

Fire magic (Old Camp, Innos)

Fire is the path of direct damage and powerful area-of-effect spells. It is the faster route to get rolling, because all it really asks early is that you close The Price of Magic quest, then start buying circles from Corristo on the Fire Mage path. Early Firebolt gives you a reliable ranged attack, and the school scales into heavy destruction later. If you want a clean, aggressive caster and you like the Old Camp, this is your lane.

Water magic (New Camp, Adanos)

Water leans on Ice magic and crowd control, freezing enemies so you can pick them apart or just walk away. The questline to reach it is longer than Fire’s, but the late-game power is equal. Saturas teaches the Water Mage circles. This is the thinking-mage path, strong for players who like locking enemies down instead of melting them, and it pairs with the New Camp.

Both the Old Camp and New Camp paths can climb to the highest circles, with the very top circle unlocked late through Xardas, the necromancer who appears further into the game.

The Swamp psionic path and its ceiling

The Swamp Camp’s Brotherhood follows the Sleeper and teaches psionic and wind magic, the Charm and Sleep school. It is the most hybrid-friendly start, because you can pair it with Templar melee, but it carries a hard cap. Swamp magic is permanently limited to the fourth circle. You cannot reach the fifth or sixth circle spells the other two camps unlock. You are buying early flexibility and a faster start with your late-game ceiling.

That is the central trade across all three schools. Old and New climb higher but make you earn it. The Swamp gives you usable power sooner and stops earlier.

Why mages start weak and finish strong

Advancement needs both Learning Points and ore, and the higher circles get expensive. That cost is deliberate. Early on you have one or two cheap spells and a thin Mana pool, so you lean on a melee weapon or scrolls to survive. By the mid-game your circles open up, your Mana climbs, and you start out-damaging every other build. Plan for the slow start. Keep a backup weapon, fund your circle purchases with the ore farming guide, and do not expect the build to feel good until you are a few circles deep.

The spellblade hybrid

If a slow, fragile early game sounds miserable, the spellblade is the compromise. You build Strength melee as your backbone, the way a warrior does, then layer a few low-circle runes on top for ranged poke, healing, or crowd control. The Swamp psionic path is built for this, since Charm and Sleep pair well with a melee character, and its fourth-circle cap matters less when magic is your second job rather than your first.

The cost of a hybrid is real, though. With no respec, every Learning Point you spend on Mana and runes is a point not spent on Strength and weapon mastery. A spellblade is weaker at melee than a pure warrior and weaker at magic than a pure mage. It is a great second-run build for players who already know the game. As a first character it is the easiest way to end up mediocre at both halves.

Learning Point order for a pure mage

  1. Finish The Price of Magic, then buy Rune Magic plus your first rune (5 LP).
  2. Mana, in chunks, enough to actually cast your spells without running dry.
  3. Your first circle access from your camp’s mage trainer, then keep buying circles as you level.
  4. One income skill or a backup weapon mastery, so you can survive the weak early stretch and afford the expensive circles.

Pick Fire for speed and damage or Water for control, accept the rough start, and the mage becomes the build that ends fights before they begin.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is Fire or Water magic better in Gothic 1 Remake?

Both reach the top circles, so neither is strictly better. Fire from the Old Camp is the faster path to unlock and leans on direct damage and AoE. Water from the New Camp has a longer questline but offers Ice crowd control. Pick the one whose camp you want to live in.

How do you become a mage in Gothic 1 Remake?

You join the Old or New Camp, complete the rune magic intro quest The Price of Magic, then buy Rune Magic plus your first rune from a mage trainer. After that you buy access to each higher circle of magic from your camp's mages as you level Mana.

Can you mix melee and magic in Gothic 1 Remake?

Yes, a spellblade hybrid works, usually pairing Strength melee with a few low-circle runes for ranged poke or healing. The Swamp Camp's psionic path leans this way but caps at the fourth circle, so a hybrid trades a high magic ceiling for early survivability.
