Gothic 1 Remake: Sleeper Temple Walkthrough (Chapter 5)
A full Chapter 5 walkthrough for the Sleeper Temple in the Gothic 1 Remake. How to get in past the orcs, the five undead shamans and their stones, claiming Uriziel, and recharging the sword before the finale.
What Chapter 5 is really about
Chapter 5 is the turn where the whole game stops being a colony survival story and becomes a dungeon crawl into the Sleeper Temple. The chapter carries the banner name The Custodians of the Portal, and its real work is one long expedition: get into the temple, beat five undead shamans, collect five stones, and walk out with Uriziel, the sword the finale is built around.
This is the hardest stretch of the game so far, and the difficulty climbs sharply once you are inside. Go in genuinely strong. If your character or your spell circles are not where they should be, back up and read the best builds guide before you commit, because there is no easy walking this section back. For the wider map of where this sits in the story, the chapter walkthrough lays out all six chapters.
A quick honesty note before we start. The item names in this section are a localization mess. The five stones and blades have completely different English names depending on which guide you read, so I will name the shamans, who are consistent, and stay vague on the exact stone names rather than feed you something that might be wrong.
Getting into the temple
The temple expedition begins as you cross the threshold at the end of the preceding quest, The Path Chosen, sometimes written The Chosen Path. To reach the entrance you travel through the Orc City, and the key item is the Ulu-Mulu. With the Ulu-Mulu in hand the orcs treat you differently, which is what lets you move through their territory instead of being swarmed on sight.
Once you are through, talk to Ur-Shak. He points you toward the temple entry. From here sources describe a couple of ways forward, so treat them as alternate approaches rather than one fixed sequence:
- The peaceful route. Find Muk in the orc village and bring him Meatbug Ragout, the same food he was eating back near the Old Camp. In exchange he opens a secret entrance, though you will need the climbing skill to use it. This lets you skip fighting every orc in the enclave.
- The gate puzzle route. Other accounts describe a sealed gate solved with a teleport scroll pulled from a chest in a cave, or by casting Telekinesis on the shamans’ statue to topple it and then using the statue as a lever at the gate.
If neither route is open to you, the fallback is the loud one: fight through. Either way, once you are past the entrance you are committed to the temple proper.
The Dreamer’s Nightmare: inside the temple
The dungeon run itself is the main quest, titled The Dreamer’s Nightmare by some guides and Nightmare of the Dreamer by others. Same quest, different translation of the name. Worth flagging because the title sounds like a dream sequence, but what the sources actually describe is a straightforward, dangerous temple dungeon, not a hallucination.
Inside you work through a series of chambers that mix combat and puzzles. Expect wheel and handle mechanisms, blood fountain puzzles where you reroute flow to drop red barriers, and platform jumps. The danger level here is high, so keep your potion stack deep and your armor at its best. Ore Armor, upgraded if you can manage it, helps a lot with the fire and melee damage the temple throws at you.
The core loop is this: clear a chamber, beat the shaman guarding it, take its stone, and move deeper.
The five undead shamans
There are five undead orc shamans, one per stone. The names are well agreed on across guides, with only minor spelling drift:
- Varrag-Hashor
- Varrag-Kasorg, sometimes spelled Kazorg
- Varrag-Unhilqt, with several spelling variants
- Varrag-Ruuushk, also spelled Ruushk
- Varrag-Arushat, given the fuller name Grash-Varrag-Arushat as the leader
Each one drops a stone that goes toward Uriziel. The exact stone names are where the sources fall apart. One guide calls them Worldcleaver, Lightbringer, Timesplinter, Banstone, and Fiendeye. Another lists Blade of Light, Clefter of Worlds, Blade of Time, Demon Strike, and Blade of Banishment. A third gives yet another set. Since no two sources agree, treat any single name as just one possible localization rather than the canonical one.
The fight that matters most for understanding the temple is the leader, Grash-Varrag-Arushat. Normal weapons do zero damage to him. You will swing a few times, the game flags a dead end in your journal, and you are forced to retreat. That is intentional, not a bug. The game is telling you that brute force does not work on the deepest threats here, which sets up the entire point of Uriziel.
Claiming Uriziel
During the deeper shaman fights, a strange sword appears on a pedestal or platform. That is Uriziel, also spelled Urizel. Sources disagree on exactly which chamber it spawns in, with some saying it is the final shaman’s platform and others tying it to Varrag-Ruuushk’s chamber, so just expect it to show up as you push into the deeper rooms.
Take the sword and the five stones, then head back to Xardas. He identifies the blade as Uriziel. This is the moment the chapter has been building toward, but the sword is not ready to use yet.
Recharging the sword
A bare Uriziel is not enough. Xardas works the five stones into the sword, then sends you to restore its power. The chain runs through your old companions:
- Xardas sets you on the path and tells you the sword needs recharging.
- You talk to Gorn, who routes you onward.
- Milten does the actual work. You bring Uriziel to the Water Mages’ magic ore pile, Milten speaks a formula, and you drive the sword into the ore to charge it.
- You return to Xardas with the finished weapon.
That recharged Uriziel is what lets you harm the temple’s strongest enemies, including the shaman that shrugged off your normal weapons earlier. Do not skip this. Walking into Chapter 6 with an uncharged sword means you cannot finish the game.
The sixth circle of magic
If you are playing a mage, Chapter 5 is also roughly when the magic ceiling lifts. Xardas, the most powerful mage and necromancer in the game, grants the sixth circle of magic for a fee, and it does not matter whether you went fire or water. He is the last mentor either path gets. The exact timing of when this unlocks is a little fuzzy across sources, so think of it as available around the Uriziel storyline rather than a fixed beat, and note that the original 2001 game may have handled the sixth circle differently. If your spell progression is unclear, the magic guide walks through the circles and runes.
Before you descend
By the end of Chapter 5 you should have:
- The five stones turned in.
- A fully recharged Uriziel in hand.
- Your best armor, ideally upgraded Ore Armor.
- A heavy stock of healing potions and any permanent stat potions you have been hoarding.
Get all of that squared away, because Chapter 6 is the final descent and it does not let up. When you are ready, the Sleeper final boss and ending guide covers the last hall, the five hearts, and how the game closes out. The full lineup of fights you will face along the way is in the all bosses guide.
Frequently Asked Questions
How do you get into the Sleeper Temple in Gothic 1 Remake?
You enter Chapter 5 by carrying the Ulu-Mulu through the Orc City and talking to Ur-Shak. There is an optional non-combat route: find Muk in the orc village, bring him Meatbug Ragout, and he opens a secret entrance that needs the climbing skill. Otherwise you fight your way through the orcs.
How many shamans are in the Sleeper Temple?
Five undead orc shamans, each guarding a stone. The fifth and toughest, often listed as Grash-Varrag-Arushat, takes zero damage from normal weapons, which is the game's way of telling you that you need a recharged Uriziel to deal with the temple's strongest foes.
Where do you get Uriziel in Gothic 1 Remake?
A strange sword appears on a platform during the deeper shaman fights inside the temple. That is Uriziel. You take it and the five stones back to Xardas, who identifies it, then you restore its power at the Water Mages' magic ore pile with Milten's help.
