Subnautica 2 Best Base Locations: Early, Mid & Late Game Spots
The best base locations in Subnautica 2 for every stage of the game. Resource access, power options, and safety ratings for each spot on Zezura.
Where you build matters more than how you build. A gorgeous base in the wrong spot means constant resource runs, no power, and hostile fauna knocking on your walls. A plain dome in the right location can carry you through the entire game.
Here are the best base locations for every stage of your playthrough, ranked by resource access, power options, and safety.
Early Game Locations
Near the Lifepod (Starter Area)
Distance from Lifepod: 0-30m Depth: 15-25m Safety: High
The obvious choice and honestly not a bad one. You’re already here. The water is shallow, fauna is minimal, and you can breathe from the Lifepod’s oxygen supply while building. Resources in the immediate area include basic stuff like Limestone (Titanium, Copper), Sandstone, and plant fibers.
Power options: Solar Panel on the roof works fine during the day. You’ll run dry at night with solar alone, but for the first few hours of play, it’s enough.
Downsides: Limited rare resources. No Silver or Lead nearby. You’ll outgrow this spot fast.
Verdict: Good for your first 1-2 hours. Don’t invest too heavily here.
60 Meters East of Lifepod (Current Zone)
Distance from Lifepod: 60m east Depth: 20-35m Safety: High
This is my pick for the best early game base. Water currents run through this zone, visible as blue streaks in the water. That means Hydroelectric Turbine access from day one. At 12 energy per second, 24/7, you’ll never see the “Oxygen Production Offline” warning.
The area has similar basic resources to the Lifepod zone, and you’re still close enough to swim back to your pod for the free oxygen supply.
Power options: Hydroelectric Turbine (12 E/sec, constant). This alone makes it the best early spot.
Downsides: Still no rare materials nearby. You’ll need to make trips north for Silver.
Verdict: Best early game location. Build here, power up, and use it as a staging base.
Old Habitat (300m North)
Distance from Lifepod: ~300m north Depth: 40-60m Safety: Moderate
The Old Habitat is a derelict base from a previous expedition. The structure itself isn’t usable, but the surrounding cave network is loaded with resources. Copper, Silver, and Titanium deposits are all within swimming distance. This is where you’ll come to gather materials for anything requiring Silver — which includes the Standard Air Tank, one of the most important early upgrades.
Power options: Solar works if you build above the caves. Check for currents in the area for hydroelectric potential.
Downsides: Deeper water means more oxygen management. Some fauna in the cave system can be aggressive. The 300m swim from the Lifepod is long without a vehicle.
Verdict: Strong secondary base or outpost. Consider building a small supply depot here rather than a full base.
Mid Game Locations
Cicada Wreck
Distance from Lifepod: ~380m ENE Depth: 50-80m Safety: Moderate
The Cicada Wreck is a downed spacecraft, and it’s the best mid-game base location for one reason: Lead. You need Lead for radiation-shielded equipment, and the Cicada Wreck area has it in quantity. The wreck itself contains scannable technology fragments, including parts needed for vehicle upgrades.
This is also where you’ll find one of the Tadpole submersible fragments (in the Lander Garage section), so you’ll be visiting anyway. Might as well set up a base.
Power options: Hydroelectric if currents pass nearby. Otherwise, pair solar with a Bioreactor for reliable indoor power.
Downsides: Deeper water, more hostile fauna. You’ll want an Air Tank upgrade and ideally a Tadpole before committing to a full base here.
Verdict: Ideal mid-game main base. Good resources, good loot, manageable depth.
Bloom Infestation Zone (200m NW)
Distance from Lifepod: ~200m NW Depth: 30-50m Safety: Low (until cleared)
This area is covered in Bloom Cankers, which are organic growths blocking access to deeper areas. You’ll come here as part of the story to use the Sonic Resonator and clear the infestation. Once cleared, the zone opens up with good resources and interesting terrain.
Power options: Variable. Scout the cleared area for currents or thermal vents.
Downsides: You can’t build here safely until you’ve completed the Bloom Canker clearance. Pre-clearance, the area is hostile and hard to navigate.
Verdict: Viable after clearance. Not the first choice, but worth considering if you want a base between early and late-game zones.
Late Game Locations
Tadpole Pens Area (675m East)
Distance from Lifepod: 675m east Depth: 80-120m Safety: Low
The Tadpole Pens are a story mission location far to the east. Getting here requires the Heat Tolerance adaptation, which you earn through story progression. The area is deep, dangerous, and far from everything. But it’s also where late-game content happens.
Power options: Thermal Plant (16 E/sec) if heat sources are available in the area. Given that you need Heat Tolerance to reach it, thermal vents are likely present.
Downsides: Extremely far from the Lifepod. You’ll need a Tadpole to make regular trips. Hostile fauna. Deep water drains oxygen fast.
Verdict: Late-game forward operating base. Don’t build here until you have a vehicle and upgraded equipment.
Abyss Edge
Distance from Lifepod: Far Depth: 150m+ Safety: Very Low
The Abyss Edge is the deep frontier. This is endgame territory with unique resources and the most dangerous creatures on Zezura. Building here is a statement. You’re saying “I own this planet.”
Power options: Thermal Plant is your best bet at these depths. Solar is worthless this deep.
Downsides: Everything wants to kill you. Oxygen management is constant. Getting here and back is a commitment even with a vehicle.
Verdict: Only for players who’ve mastered the game systems and want a challenge base. Not practical, but satisfying.
Multi-Base Strategy
Don’t try to make one base do everything. The best approach is a network:
- Main Base (60m east of Lifepod) — Your primary home. Fabrication, storage, bedroom, full power grid
- Resource Outpost (Old Habitat, 300m N) — Small base with storage lockers and a Fabricator. Mine Silver, Copper, Titanium and store it here
- Mid-Game Hub (Cicada Wreck) — Secondary full base. Vehicle docking, Lead processing, tech scanning
- Deep Outpost (Tadpole Pens or Abyss Edge) — Minimal base with oxygen, power, and storage for deep exploration
Connect your bases mentally by knowing what resources each one accesses. Don’t haul Silver from the Old Habitat caves all the way back to your Lifepod base. Process it at the outpost and carry finished products home.
Location Evaluation Checklist
When scouting a new base location, check these five things:
- Water depth — Shallower is easier. Below 80m you need upgraded air
- Current presence — Blue streaks in the water mean free hydroelectric power
- Nearby resources — What minerals and plants are within 50m?
- Fauna danger — Aggressive creatures nearby? Can you build without getting attacked?
- Story proximity — Are there wrecks, fragments, or objectives nearby?
A location that scores well on three or more of these is worth building on. If it only hits one, it’s an outpost at best.
One More Thing
In co-op, base location matters even more. Four players burn through resources and oxygen faster. Pick locations with abundant materials and strong power sources. The current zone east of the Lifepod scales well for groups because multiple turbines can feed the same grid. Build wide, build early, and make sure everyone knows where the storage lockers are.
