Subnautica 2 Collector Leviathan Guide: Where to Find It and How to Survive
Everything known about the Collector Leviathan in Subnautica 2 Early Access. Where the two specimens patrol, how it hunts, why you cannot kill it, and what the roadmap teases for its future home biome.
The Collector Leviathan is the scariest thing currently swimming in Subnautica 2, and unlike a lot of the leviathan chatter floating around online, this one is real and already in the Early Access build. It is not a teaser. Two of them are in your game right now, parked over the best resource fields on the map, daring you to come closer.
Here is what it is, where it patrols, how it hunts, and the only strategy that actually keeps you alive.
What it is
The Collector Leviathan is a massive cephalopod, roughly 110 meters long. It has a turquoise body with red accents and pale blue patterning across its forehead, plus a huge bioluminescent purple structure on top of its head that can emit different colored light. Two pairs of enormous tentacles hang off it. The outer pair ends in clawed fingers built for piercing prey. The inner pair has soft, unclawed fingers for manipulation.
The databank calls it intelligent and aggressive, and both words earn their place. This is not a dumb wandering hazard like some of the smaller predators. It tracks you on purpose.
Where it patrols
There are two specimens in the current build, and they guard the two richest resource zones you will want to visit:
- Above the Karakorum Metal Farms. One Collector Leviathan patrols over this area. The Metal Farms are a metal-rich region around 500m deep, and you will end up here for Haul Chassis fragments and materials. The leviathan is the reason that swim is dangerous.
- In a trench within the Sparse Plains. The other lives in the Sparse Plains region, a resource-rich zone where the leviathan roams. The trench is its territory.
Notice the pattern. Both leviathans sit on top of resources you actually need. The game is using the Collector as a gatekeeper, and that is the whole tension. The loot is real, and so is the thing standing on it. For where these regions sit on the wider map, the biome map guide lays out the full region layout.
How it hunts you
The Collector Leviathan has a clear attack pattern once it notices you, and reading it is the difference between escaping and dying.
When it detects you, it emits a sonar pulse and turns toward you. That sonar pulse is your warning. If you hear and see it orient on you, you are already its target and you need to be moving away, not toward.
During an attack, its head opens to reveal what the databank calls a Broadcast Organ, and its markings glow. In that state it can grab your Tadpole and throw it, or swipe at it for heavier damage. The grab-and-throw is disorienting and can fling you into terrain or deeper water.
The danger rating is brutal. Caught outside a vehicle, it is an instant kill. There is no health bar to outlast, no window where you tank the hit and keep going. If it gets you while you are free-swimming, you are dead.
The only real strategy: avoid it
You cannot kill the Collector Leviathan. Full stop. It is built to be avoided, not fought, so every “strategy” comes down to staying out of its reach. Here is how to actually do that.
Use a vehicle, never free-swim its zone. Outside a vehicle it is an instant kill. Inside a Tadpole you can survive a grab or a swipe, which buys you the seconds you need to retreat. So never enter Metal Farms airspace or the Sparse Plains trench on foot if you can help it. The Tadpole chassis guide covers which chassis to bring, and for a quick approach the Scout Ray’s 10 m/s speed helps you get in and out fast.
Watch for the sonar pulse. That is the tell. The moment it pulses and turns toward you, break off and put distance between you. Do not try to grab one more node.
Approach low and use terrain. The Metal Farms and the Sparse Plains trench have cover. Hug the seabed, use ridges and structures to break line of sight, and grab resources in short dashes rather than long exposed swims.
Have an exit planned before you arrive. Know which direction you are leaving in before you go in. Panicking and swimming the wrong way into the trench wall is how people die here. A deployed beacon at the edge of the zone helps you orient when it is chasing you.
Do not bring your only vehicle into a fight. If it grabs and throws your Tadpole, you can lose the vehicle. Treat every visit as a smash-and-grab, not a tour.

What is confirmed vs what is coming
This is where a lot of the online noise gets things wrong, so let me draw a clean line.
Confirmed and in the game now: the Collector Leviathan itself, both specimens, at the Karakorum Metal Farms and the Sparse Plains trench. You can go find them today.
Teased for the future: the developers have flagged a major expansion described as the home of the Collector Leviathan, a dedicated dark biome meant to deliver the most intense atmosphere in the game. ⚠️ That dedicated biome is a longer-term roadmap goal, not part of the confirmed EA 1.1 (a quality-of-life patch) or EA 1.2 (the co-op-centric patch). So if you read that the Collector Leviathan is “coming in the next update,” that is mixing up the existing creature with its future home biome. The creature is here. The themed region around it is the part still on the way.
Treat the two Collectors already in your world as the real, present threat. They are reason enough to respect those resource zones. The dedicated biome, whenever it lands, will only make this thing more central to the game.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can you kill the Collector Leviathan in Subnautica 2?
No. The Collector Leviathan cannot be killed and must be avoided. If it catches you outside a vehicle, it is an instant kill. Inside a Tadpole you can survive a grab or a swipe, but it will damage the vehicle, so the only real strategy is to stay out of its way.
Where is the Collector Leviathan in Subnautica 2?
There are two specimens in the current Early Access build. One patrols above the Karakorum Metal Farms, and the other lives in a trench within the Sparse Plains region. Both areas are resource-rich, which is exactly why the leviathan is there guarding them.
Is the Collector Leviathan getting its own biome in Subnautica 2?
The creature is already in the game, but the developers have teased a future expansion described as the home of the Collector Leviathan. That dedicated dark biome is on the longer roadmap as a major content update, not part of the confirmed EA 1.1 or 1.2 patches.
