Subnautica 2 All Creatures List: Every Species by Biome & Threat Level
Complete list of all 51 creatures in Subnautica 2 organized by threat level and biome. Includes Leviathans, predators, herbivores, and passive fauna on planet Zezura.
The Fauna of Planet Zezura
Subnautica 2’s Early Access build contains 51 creature archetypes spread across multiple biomes on planet Zezura. Every creature falls into a threat tier: Passive (green), Wary (yellow), Aggressive (pink), or Leviathan (red). Knowing which tier you’re dealing with determines whether you swim toward something or away from it.
This guide catalogs every confirmed species, organized by threat level, with biome locations and practical notes on each.
Leviathan Class — Run or Die
Leviathans are unkillable apex predators. You cannot fight them. Your only options are avoidance, evasion, and fear.
Collector Leviathan
- Type: Enormous cephalopod
- Biome: Sparse Plains, Outer Bounds
- Behavior: Active hunter. Emits a stunning pulse, then grabs you with four tentacles. Reacts to light and sound. Will chase you across biome boundaries without losing interest.
- Tip: Turn off all lights and upgrade your Tadpole to outrun it.
Shiver Leviathan
- Type: Scythe-finned pack hunter
- Biome: The Void (5,000m+ depth)
- Behavior: Hunts in packs. Females are large and draw attention. Males are smaller and flank from the sides. Coordinated attacks make solo survival difficult.
- Tip: Avoid the Void entirely unless absolutely necessary.
Shiver Leviathan (Juvenile)
- Type: Smaller variant of the Shiver
- Biome: The Void
- Behavior: Less aggressive than adults but still dangerous in groups.
Great Jaw
- Type: Stationary clam-like trap predator
- Biome: Near Cicada Wreck, ~300m south-southwest of Lifepod
- Behavior: Doesn’t move. Uses internal tripwire tendons. Touch one and its eyes open. Touch a second while it can see you and the shell snaps shut, dissolving you in acid.
- Tip: Approach from above, break one tendon at a time, stay out of its forward field of vision.
Deepwing Brooder
- Type: Massive armored filter feeder
- Biome: Open water, medium depths
- Behavior: Mostly docile. Drops eggs mixed with decoy blobs. Classified as an opportunistic hunter despite passive default behavior.
- Tip: Safe to approach. Scan it immediately — encounters are rare.
World Tree
- Type: Titan-class organism
- Biome: Far edge of the map, beyond the Void
- Behavior: Currently dormant. Cannot be scanned. Likely story-related content for future updates.
Aggressive Predators — Killable but Dangerous
These creatures will actively attack you on sight. You can kill them with a Survival Knife, but the damage you take in return is steep. Avoidance is usually smarter than combat.
Marrowbreach
- Size: Large
- Behavior: Ambush predator. Works symbiotically with small squid that disorient prey before the Marrowbreach strikes. The Alpha variant is 50% larger with digestive enzymes that can process human tissue.
Needler Mango
- Size: Large
- Behavior: Territorial. The Alpha variant occupies the best location in its biome and is significantly larger than standard specimens.
Nibbler Mango
- Size: Large
- Behavior: Aggressive carnivore. Scanning it with a Bioscanner unlocks the Slow Metabolism passive biomod.
Bullethead
- Size: Small
- Behavior: Fast and aggressive despite its small frame. Scanning with a Bioscanner unlocks the Camouflage passive biomod.
Cerathecan
- Size: Large
- Behavior: Aggressive predator found in deeper biomes.
Epicurean
- Size: Large
- Behavior: Aggressive. One of the larger non-Leviathan predators.
Foureye
- Size: Small
- Behavior: Quick, aggressive attacker. Small but persistent.
Hycean
- Size: Large
- Behavior: Aggressive jellyfish-type predator with stinging capabilities.
Sandspear
- Size: Large
- Behavior: Aggressive arthropod. Scanning with a Bioscanner unlocks the Bioluminescence passive biomod (alongside Electric Geordie).
Scourge Hive
- Size: Large
- Behavior: Colony-type organism that swarms.
Twin Sitaray
- Size: Large
- Behavior: Aggressive paired hunters.
Veps Defender
- Size: Large
- Behavior: Territorial guard species.
Waxmoon
- Size: Large
- Behavior: Aggressive predator found in mid-depth biomes.
Herbivores & Passive Fauna — Safe to Approach
These creatures pose little to no threat. Many are food sources or have scanning value for biomod unlocks.
Geordie
- Type: Salpapod
- Behavior: Completely passive grazer. The easiest food source in the game. Cook a Geordie for 30 food points. If you’re hungry, find a Geordie.
Electric Geordie
- Type: Salpapod variant
- Behavior: Passive but generates an electric field. Scanning it with a Bioscanner unlocks the Electric Discharge active biomod and contributes to the Bioluminescence passive biomod.
Water Slug
- Type: Small slug
- Behavior: Passive. Glows at night, making them easy to spot after dark. Craft Water Slugs into water at the Fabricator for 40 units of hydration. Your primary water source alongside harvested plants.
Flash Slug
- Type: Slug variant
- Behavior: Passive. Emits bright flashes when startled.
Halfmoon
- Type: Fish
- Behavior: Common passive fish. Edible. Several variants exist including the Mirror Halfmoon.
Hammerhead
- Type: Large fish
- Behavior: Despite the intimidating name, classified as an herbivore. Safe to approach.
Hoverthorn
- Type: Passive fauna
- Behavior: Herbivore. Scanning with a Bioscanner unlocks the Threat Sense passive biomod.
Periscopic Clowncrab
- Type: Crustacean
- Behavior: Passive bottom-dweller. Entertaining to watch.
Giant Tube Salp
- Type: Large passive organism
- Behavior: Filter feeder. No threat.
Surge Jelly
- Type: Mobile jellyfish
- Behavior: Passive. Drifts through open water.
Jelly Ring
- Type: Jellyfish variant
- Behavior: Passive ring-shaped jellyfish.
Tongue Thief
- Type: Crustacean
- Behavior: Wary. Will flee on contact but doesn’t attack.
Snorkleback (Adult)
- Type: Large herbivore
- Behavior: Passive grazer. Covered in fin-spines, non-aggressive.
Pneuma
- Type: Herbivore
- Behavior: Passive. Found in shallow biomes.
Veps Sensor
- Type: Passive fauna
- Behavior: Non-aggressive counterpart to the Veps Defender.
Quadrate
- Type: Salpapod
- Behavior: Passive. Related to the Geordie family.

Scan everything you encounter. Even if a creature seems unimportant, it might unlock a biomod that changes your entire survival strategy. Scans persist through death, so risky scans are almost always worth attempting.
