Why your first weapon matters so much

The opening hours of Gothic 1 Remake are brutal if you’re swinging a rusty starter blade at a pack of scavengers. A better weapon early is worth more than a couple of levels, because damage per swing decides whether a fight is a clean kill or a panicked retreat. The good news: several of the best early weapons are free, sitting in the world waiting for anyone who knows where to look.

The thing to watch is the Strength requirement on each weapon. You can pick up a great sword and still swing it badly if your Strength is too low. So part of “best early weapon” is “best weapon you can actually use right now,” which ties straight into how you spend Learning Points. If you haven’t sorted that out, the leveling and skills guide covers training Strength and Dexterity.

Free melee weapons to grab first

These cost nothing but a short walk:

  • Old Sword: 12 edge damage, 8 Strength. Lying near the hanged man on the road toward the Old Camp, the same route Diego leads you down. The safe, no-cost first sword.
  • Shortsword: 12 edge damage, 8 Strength. Found on the Southern Wall ramparts near some crates and a torch. Same stats as the Old Sword, handy as a backup or if you missed the first one.
  • Withered Axe: 13 edge damage, 9 Strength. In the molerat cave on the Old Camp south gate route, near Nek’s body during the Vanished Warder quest. A small step up if your Strength can handle it.

The standout free pickup: Lurker’s Bite

  • Lurker’s Bite: 21 edge damage, 15 Strength. This is the strongest free sword you can grab early, and it’s why I tell people to visit the New Camp area before committing to a faction. Head from the main entrance toward the New Camp, move toward the river, and find the cave near the route. Bring a torch, because it’s dark inside, and open the chest to claim it.

The catch is the 15 Strength requirement, which you won’t have at the very start. Grab it anyway and grow into it. Pairing the Lurker’s Bite goal with a Strength training plan gives your early Learning Points a clear target.

Weapons worth a little ore

If you’ve done the early ore quests and have nuggets to spend, a couple of upgrades are worth it:

  • Whistler’s Sword: 20 edge damage, 17 Strength. Buy it from Fisk for 110 ore nuggets. There’s a side wrinkle: you can return it to Whistler for goodwill, or keep it and accept the consequences. Your call.
  • Morning Star: 23 blunt damage, 19 Strength. Tucked downstairs in a storehouse in the Old Camp market district. You’ll need to sneak into the building, so it’s a riskier grab, but the damage is excellent for the stage.

Not sure how to fund these? The ore farming guide shows how to bank over a thousand nuggets in your first couple of hours.

For archers: the Rider’s Bow

  • Rider’s Bow: 24 point damage, 14 Dexterity. The best early ranged option, found in a river cave near Drax’s area; you swim around a large boulder to reach it. A bow changes the early game completely, letting you soften or pull enemies before they ever reach you. If you’re leaning New Camp and a Dexterity build, this is your priority pickup.

What to actually grab, in order

For most players, the early weapon path looks like this:

  1. Pick up the Old Sword on the way to the Old Camp so you’re never unarmed.
  2. Detour to the New Camp cave for Lurker’s Bite and hold it as your Strength goal.
  3. If you’re going ranged, swim out for the Rider’s Bow and pivot your points into Dexterity.
  4. Once you’ve farmed ore, grab Whistler’s Sword or the Morning Star as a bridge into the mid-game.

Collect the free options before you join any camp, since exploring freely gets harder once you’ve picked a side. Then match your weapon to your build and feed Learning Points into the Strength or Dexterity it demands.
