WUCHANG: Fallen Feathers Late Boss Guide — Nightmare Demon to Xuanyangzi
Beat every late-game and endgame boss in WUCHANG: Fallen Feathers with strategies for Honglan, Bo Magus, Zhu Youjian, and the final boss.
The Endgame Gauntlet
Chapters 4 and 5 of WUCHANG: Fallen Feathers stack boss fights with barely any breathing room between them. Every enemy here hits harder than anything in the mid-game, and most bosses have two phases. Your weapons should be at +7 or higher, your Manna Vase should be nearly maxed out, and you should have a clear build committed. Trying to experiment with new weapon types at this point will get you killed.
Nightmare Demon
The Nightmare Demon is a Chapter 4 opener and feels like a mini-boss rather than a full encounter—but don’t underestimate it. It’s a dark apparition that attacks with rapid shadow strikes and can phase through the environment.
Attacks to Watch:
- Shadow lunge — It dashes forward with a claw attack. The hitbox lingers slightly after the visual, so dodge early.
- AoE pulse — It screams and releases a ring of dark energy. Back off when you see it start the animation.
- Phase shift — It turns incorporeal and relocates. Lock-on helps track it, but don’t chase blindly—it often reappears behind you.
Strategy: Aggression wins. The Nightmare Demon has a small health pool but will drag the fight out if you let it keep phasing away. Stay on top of it with fast attacks, break its poise quickly, and Obliterate to finish. Dual Blades and Longswords work best here due to their attack speed. Spells are inefficient—it moves too much for slow-casting spells to track.
Honglan — Vermilion Feathers (Rematch)
You fought Honglan at the end of Chapter 1. She’s back, and she’s been powered up significantly. New attacks, new phases, and she hits about three times harder than before.
Attacks to Watch:
- Vermilion feather barrage — A massive volley of feather projectiles covering most of the arena. Sprint in a circle rather than dodge-rolling.
- Crimson dash combo — She dashes three times in quick succession, slashing at each pass. Each dash tracks your position independently, so change direction between dodges.
- Feathered transformation — At around 40% health, she transforms and gains flight. Her aerial attacks are similar to Fang Ling’s Phase 2 but faster.
- Vermilion burst — Full-arena AoE with a two-second charge. Run to maximum distance or pop Ethereal Form.
Strategy: This fight punishes passivity hard. Honglan’s ranged attacks cover too much ground for defensive play to work. You need to close distance, pressure her between combos, and force her into melee where her patterns are more readable. The Axe Rampage build with Lifeleech sustain is the most reliable approach. Deflect builds can handle her ground-phase melee perfectly, but the aerial transformation demands switches to dodge-based play.
Save at least three Manna Vase charges for the aerial phase. She’s harder to punish in the air and you’ll take more incidental damage.
Bo Magus
The Bo Magus is a sorcerer boss who fights with a combination of dark magic and melee staff attacks. Defeating him drops the Echo of the Bo Magus spell—one of the best defensive spells in the game.
Attacks to Watch:
- Dark orb chain — He fires five orbs in sequence, each tracking independently. Dodge laterally through them one at a time.
- Staff sweep — When you’re in melee range, he swipes with his staff. It’s fast but the damage is low compared to his magic.
- Gravity well — He creates a vortex that pulls you toward a central explosion. Sprint away from the center the moment you feel the pull.
- Phase 2 enrage — Below 50% health, his spells get faster and he starts chaining them without gaps.
Strategy: Like the Bo Sorcerer earlier in the game, the Bo Magus folds under melee pressure. But he’s smarter about creating distance. Close the gap with a dodge through his first spell, combo him until he teleports, then close again. In Phase 2, he chains spells fast enough that you need to weave dodges between each melee combo. Ethereal Form is almost mandatory here for surviving his spell chains while you reposition. The Echo of the Bo Magus spell he drops creates a shield that tanks three hits—use it in future fights liberally.
Dragon Emperor — Zhu Youjian (The Reborn)
This is the Chapter 4 final boss. Two phases, two separate health bars, and one of the most visually spectacular fights in the game. You fight him in the ruins of Worship’s Rise.
Phase 1 — The Reborn
A massive beast form. Think of it as a harder version of the Fierce Tiger fight.
Attacks to Watch:
- Slam + tail whip — He slams forward then immediately whips his tail. Dodge the slam to the side, then dodge again for the tail. Don’t assume you’re safe after the first dodge.
- Claw chase — He swipes with both claws in an alternating pattern while advancing. Roll backward twice to get out of range.
- Rain of Blood — He summons a pool on the ground that explodes after a short delay. If you see red forming on the floor, leave the area.
- Roar — A flinch that interrupts your actions. Not much damage, but it sets you up for a follow-up attack.
Phase 2 — Dragon Emperor Zhu Youjian
He stands up, draws a sword, and becomes a completely different fight. Fire-based AoE attacks, lightning strikes, and a nasty health regeneration mechanic at 50% health.
Attacks to Watch:
- Red trail explosions — His sword leaves red trails in the air that explode a moment later. Don’t stand where he just swung.
- Hexagonal prism — He summons a red geometric shape that fires lightning bolts and opens portals for projectiles. Destroy it if possible, or just maintain distance from it.
- Health regeneration — At 50% HP, he regenerates a chunk of health and triggers a massive explosion. Run to the edge of the arena when you see him start glowing.
- Fire AoE chains — In the second half of Phase 2, he chains fire attacks rapidly. Ethereal Form is your survival tool.
Strategy: Zhu Youjian is weak to Fire damage and Burn status—ironic for a fire-themed boss. If you have Fire-element consumables or a weapon with innate Fire, use them. Echo of the Bo Magus is the best defensive spell here because the shield absorbs three hits regardless of damage, covering you during the explosion and AoE chain moments. Check for available NPC summon signs near the arena — having a second target for the boss to focus on makes Phase 2 dramatically easier.
Zhao Yun — Eternal Glory (Optional)
Zhao Yun is only accessible if you’ve completed the White-Robed Elder’s questline. He’s an honorable duel-style boss—no AoE gimmicks, no transformations. Just two fighters and a spear.
Attacks to Watch:
- Perfect slash combo — A five-hit chain with precise timing. Every hit is Deflectable.
- Spear thrust — A long-range poke that catches you if you’re at mid-distance. Close in or back away—don’t sit at the tip of his range.
- Dragon’s wrath — A charged overhead that deals massive damage. The windup is long and obvious.
Strategy: This is the ultimate test for Deflect builds. His attacks are clean, readable, and designed to be parried. A player who can Deflect his full combo will destroy him in minutes. For non-Deflect builds, treat him like a rhythm game—dodge his combos, punish the recovery, don’t rush.
Demon of Obsession (Optional)
Unlocked by completing both the He Youzai and Fang Yao questlines, obtaining the Ring of Samsara, and choosing the wrong answer at the third riddle door in the Depths of Capital. The Demon of Obsession is a chaotic fight with massive AoE attacks and phase transitions that change the arena layout.
Strategy: This is a test of everything you’ve learned about spatial awareness. The arena shrinks as the fight progresses. Keep mobile, save Ethereal Form for AoE moments, and prioritize poise damage to trigger Obliterate windows. The Spear Control build actually performs well here because range lets you attack without standing in danger zones.
Xuanyangzi — Feathery Ambition (Final Boss)
The mandatory final boss of WUCHANG: Fallen Feathers. Xuanyangzi awaits you at the Gate of Truth. He’s a duel-style boss similar to Zhao Yun but faster, more aggressive, and with a wider moveset.
Attacks to Watch:
- Feathery dash combo — He dashes through you three times, each from a different angle, then follows with a spinning slash.
- Empyrean crash — He leaps into the air and crashes down. Dodge the impact, then punish his landing recovery.
- Spell chains — He uses his own versions of player spells, including Ethereal Form. When he goes translucent, don’t attack—wait for him to rematerialize.
- Final desperation — Below 20% health, his attack speed increases dramatically and he chains every move without recovery gaps.
Strategy: Stay close. Xuanyangzi is more dangerous at range because his dash attacks have extreme tracking. In melee, his options are more limited and his combos are more Deflectable. The Lifeleech mechanic from the Axe Rampage build and the Clash mechanic from Dual Blades are your best sustain tools. If you can Deflect consistently, the Longsword build melts him. Save your Manna Vase charges for the sub-20% desperation phase—that’s when most players die.
If you completed the Storyteller’s questline, you can summon him here. Do it. The aggro split makes the desperation phase survivable.
